Oakwood/RV Clubs

Oakwood Art Club

We are proud to offer ART CLUB to 1st and 2nd graders this Spring! During ART CLUB we will be using mixed media to work on 2D and 3D art once a week. Please note if there are two sessions each week they will be the same lesson. Please only sign up once a week. Each session will have 20 students. Let’s be creative!

Oakwood Art Club will meet Tuesdays or Thursdays from 3:30 to 4:30. 

The Tuesday session will start 1/29 and end 5/7.

The Thursday session will start 1/31 and ends 5/9. 


Oakwood Early Act Club Boys and Girls Grades 1 and 2

Early Act is a club for first and second graders at Oakwood that is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lemont-Homer Glen. Students volunteer their time and talents for worthwhile causes that impact individuals at the school, community, and worldwide levels. Students are encouraged to be helpful and caring citizens through character building activities and leadership opportunities. 

The club meets for an hour after school twice a month. 

If interested in joining, students should complete the paper application that will be distributed in September.

Due to size constraints, only two students from a classroom will be accepted.

There is no registration fee for this club.

Oakwood K-2 Sign Language Club

Beginners' club where students learn to use sign language and communicate with sign language with their deaf and hard of hearing peers.

Students learn sign language through games, conversations and other fun activities.

This club meets once a week on Mondays from 3:30-4:30. 


Oakwood Boys and Girls 2nd Grade Choir--Winter/Spring--Closed

This choir is combined with the 3rd grade choir. Students learn to sing a variety of songs together as a group.  

Choir will meet on Tuesdays beginning January 15th and will continue through May. Possible performances include the Oakwood art show, OW/RVmusicals, and area nursing homes.

River Valley Board Game Club Boys and Girls Grades 3-5

Learn and play popular board games in this casual, after school club. Members will learn an array of games and have fun with their peers.  This club meets once a week on Thursday’s until 4:30. This club is open to 3rd- 5th graders.

River Valley Book Club Boys and Girls Grades 3-5

Book club will meet approximately once a week on Thursdays for 25 sessions after school for an hour.  Book club members will read a varitey of books, discuss books, complete projects and create their own books.

River Valley 4th and 5th Grade Choir

This club is for students who enjoy running or want to prepare for Cross Country at Old Quarry and beyond.

River Valley Percussion Ensemble 5th Grade Boys and Girls

Students in the RV Percussion Ensemble will perform a variety of group percussion repertoire. While the main focus of the ensemble will be West African style drumming, we will also explore other genres and percussion instruments including xylophones and metallophones. Students will perform for their families at the end of their session. This program will run for 12 sessions on Mondays after school for one hour. Limited to 14 participants.


River Valley E-Scrapbooking Club Boys and Girls Grades 3-5

Students will learn to create memory books using print materials and e-scrapbooks using their chromebooks.  

E-Scrapbooking club will meet on Thursdays after school for an hour for 25 sessions beginning September 20, 2018.

The Gardening Club will meet in the fall and spring on Mondays after school. The club sponsors will work out calendar details with parents.

The Garden club will meet for an hour after school on Mondays from 3:30-4:30. The purpose of the garden club is to expose the students to the process of gardening from planting the seeds to harvesting the vegetables. Students will be working with soil and gardening tools and planting in the garden beds at River Valley.

The Random Acts of Kindness club will meet on Mondays after school for one hour. The purpose of the club is to give students an opportunity to participate in various community service activities and support RV staff and students through various activities. Students are introduced to and will learn a foriegn language in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

RV Yoga Club

This club will meet after school for one hour on Thursday from 3:30-4:30 and will run two sessions: Fall (Aug.-Dec.) and Spring (Jan.-May). 

The Spring session is full. 

Students will practice the art of yoga with physical postures, meditation, and relaxation techniques. Yoga helps develop mind and body awareness, builds concentration and focus, enhances physical strength, and refines balance and coordination. This club is for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.

Students will meet on Thursday from 3:30-4:30PM. Students will need to bring their own yoga mat and water bottle. They should dress comfortably.

Limit of 15 students per session.

Art Club will meet most Tuesdays after school until 3:30.

Students will enhance their knowledge and understanding of the arts through a variety of activities including but not limited to ceramics, drawing and paintings. Art Club will be collaborating with the high school art club at various times this year.

The first meeting will take place on Tuesday, August 28, 2018, after school for all participants.

After the first meeting, students may be divided into 2 sessions--Fall (6th grade) and Winter/Spring (7th and 8th grades).

Old Quarry Badminton Club Girls and Boys in Grades 6-8

Do you enjoy playing badminton?  Give this sport a chance! Students will have an opportunity to learn about the sport including rules, strategy and skills. Weekly practice will help prepare the students for the brand new sport at LHS. Guest coaches, high school players and prior player may join our practices to enhance the experience.

The Badminton Club will meet once a week at the Core from 2:30-3:30 from September to February.

Old Quarry Boys Baseball Grades 6-8

The Old Quarry baseball team will play up to 10 games during the course of the season before the state series begins. Practicies after school at Bambrick Park from 2:45-4:00.

This club is for both beginners and experienced players. Minimum of five games will be played against area schools. This club is not part of the SDEAA conference. Practices after school 2 or 3 times per week. Practice times will alternate between a 2:30 or 4:30 start time. Some practices may take place at the Core.

Season runs from mid-October to winter break.

This club will be limited to 20 participants.

Board game club will promote a variety of different skills that are essential in the formative years. Social, creative, logic, pattern recognition, imagination, and above all good sportsmanship will be improved through a variety of board games in the club.

Bowling club is for both the beginner bowler and those with more experience. Practice will take place on most Tuesdays and Thursdays after school at Strike and Spare located at 811 Northern Drive, Lockport. Students will be bussed to the bowling center but must be picked up by family by 5:30 p.m.  Strike and Spare will provide shoes and use of a bowling ball. Practices will start in early February. 

Bowlers must qualify in order to participate in tournaments, regionals, sectionals and state series.


Old Quarry Brass Ensemble

Drumline club meets once a week for the entire duration of the school year. Prior musical experience is required and band participation is highly recommended.

All students are welcome--experienced or not!  Students learn the fundamentals of chess including rules and strategy.  Chess is a fun game that has many beneficial aspects including improving problem solving and critical thinking skills. 

The Old Quarry chess club participates/competes in the SDEAA conference. Practices begin in October and the season goes through January. The conference tournament is January 26, 2019, at Old Quarry.

The Junior Varsity Cheer squad learns a variety of cheers and beginning stunts.

JV Cheer attends all home basketball games for boys and girls basketball. The season runs from October to December.

The purpost of the conservation club is to build an understanding of  the importance of recycling at school and at home.  Students will be responsible for recycling paper at Old Quarry through weekly collections from classrooms and offices.  Students will also learn about conservation issues and take field trips to local sites.  Meetings will take place weekly after school for an hour.

Drama Club puts on a play production in the springtime of the school year. 

Auditions are held in early December, and performances are in mid-March.

Rehearsals are normally on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Longer and more frequent rehearsals occur closer to the performance dates. 

Registration is based on successful tryout by performer. Do not register until after tryouts are completed.

NOTE: Backstage crew members do not sign up for tryouts but can register and pay immediately.

OQ Journalism Club

Members of Old Quarry’s Journalism Club will differentiate between and create news articles such as editorial pieces, feature stories and columns. Students will also learn about photojournalism, review how-to and promotional articles and Twitter posts. We will learn about and adhere to the rules of responsible journalism while representing OQMS.

  • Club runs from late August - end of May
  • All Club members will meet with the advisor in person usually two Wednesdays each month from 2:30-4:00 p.m.
  • All Club members will be expected to join and participate in the Journalism Club Google Classroom and Google Drive Journalism Collaborative Folder created by the advisor in between face-to face meetings (there will be assignments and deadlines to meet).
  • Some journalism assignments will require members to attend at-home school events for journalism purposes

Old Quarry Mathletes

Mathletes is a club designed to build problem-solving skills, encourage teamwork, and have fun.

Students meet weekly to work through mathematical problems and puzzles.

All students are invited  to participate in weekly meetings; however, competition is sometimes limited by the number of allowed entries.

Participants will be chosen through a series of practice competitions held during the meetings.

This activity begins in October and runs through early-May.

Practices are usually held after school. 

Approximately 4-6 competitions are scheduled during the course of the season and most are held on Saturdays. Students will also participate in the SouthCook Math Bowl.

Old Quarry will be staging its second musical production with Shrek, Jr.  on December 6th, 7th and 8th! Join the club and be part of Shrek, Jr., The Musical--whether behind the scenes in makeup, set design or up front singing! Tryouts for the performance parts will take place on August 28th and 29th with call backs on Aug. 30th. Students will meet after school at 2:45 in the OQ cafe for tryouts.

PEEPs (Peers Educating Exceptional People) After Hours Club is a club to build friendships between students with disabilities and typically developing peers.  PEEPs will meet once a week from 2:30-4:00 throughout the school year.  Students will participate in various activities including sports, art, music, technology, and culinary arts while fostering friendships and building social skills.  Club members will also have the opportunity to attend school functions together throughout the school year!

Dates of meetings and activities will be provided by the sponsor at the first meeting.

OQ Student Council

Student Council will run from early September through mid-May.

Meetings will take place in the mornings every other week before school at 6:50 am.

Meeting day TBD (last school year meetings were Wednesday mornings).

Students will learn leadership skills, plan school activities, and have many chances to volunteer their time for their school and community.

Includes approximately 5 home meets and 2-3 invitational meets.
