Message from the Principal

Welcome to Oakwood School!  Our building is an Early Childhood through 2nd Grade School, which houses roughly 700 students. As an attendance center, we take in all primary-aged students who live within our district's boundaries.

Currently, we have ten sections of kindergarten, nine sections of first grade, and nine sections of second grade.  We believe that each child is unique and it is our role and responsibility to build upon each child's strengths in a safe, welcoming, and nurturing environment.  The Common Core State Standards drive our instruction and practices. Knowing that children learn through a variety of learning styles, we incorporate various strategies and differentiate instruction to meet their varying needs. We also believe in preparing our children for 21st-century learning. As part of the 21st-century learning skills, we focus on the four C's, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, and Creativity. You will see this in action in our classrooms through a variety of media.  We are embarking upon a 1:1 technology component, which allows for extended activities and problem-based learning.

I am beginning my journey here at Oakwood this school year.  I am excited to get to know everyone that is part of the Oakwood family.  While I am new to Oakwood, I have been an administrator for the past 18 years. Previously, I have held the positions of a Principal, Curriculum Coordinator, Literacy Coordinator, Early Childhood Development Coordinator, and taught Kindergarten and Preschool.

I hold a Master of Arts degree in both Early Childhood Education and Educational Administration from the University of Iowa. I earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Spanish. Professionally, I have presented nationally and at the state and local levels on topics of Literacy, Developmentally Appropriate Practices, Program Improvements and Professional Development, and Bilingual Education.

I reside in Lemont with my husband Mike, daughter Delaney, our dog Hershey and our cat Nelson.  I enjoy spending time with my family.

Please know that we have an open door policy.  Don’t hesitate to contact us via phone, e-mail, or just stop by in person. An additional way to stay connected is through our Weekly Oakwood Connection, it will be sent to our families every Tuesday.

I am looking forward to a wonderful school year with our students, families, and staff!

Kelly Zimmerman, Principal
