Board of Education
Purpose:
The purpose of the Transportation Committee is to study and make recommendations to the Board of Education based upon the evaluation of the department done by the Board’s consultant TranSpar.
Product/Result Desired:
The committee will provide an analysis and recommendations to the Board of Education on the following components of this department:
Bus routes Bus schedules Bus discipline
Starting times of schools Dismissal times of schools District boundary balance
Field trip guidelines Activity buses Bus Stop locations/distance
Safety & security Organization & Planning Policies & procedures
Training Customer service Fleet & fleet maintenance
State reporting Financial review Routing & scheduling
Performance measures Future considerations Ideas from the committee

Scope of Responsibility & Level of Authority:
The committee will be responsible for holding meetings in the public that meet the Open Meetings Act. The committee will be responsible for communicating all proceedings to the public under that same act. The committee will make recommendations to the Board of Education and final decision making authority rests with the Board of Education. Once the committee’s work is completed the administration is responsible for evaluation of any plans implemented and will be reported to the Board of Education annually.
Communication Process:
the committee leadership will take minutes and post minutes of its proceedings on the district web page. Likewise, the committee leadership will make periodic reports to the Board of Education at either a regular meeting or a committee of the whole workshop meeting. Periodic information will be shared with the public and parents to solicit input and information. The final recommendations will be made to the Board of Education at a regular meeting with consenting and dissenting opinions provided when appropriate.
Timeline:
The committee will begin its work by the end of October of 2007 and will conclude with recommendations and a report to the Board of Education in January or February of 2008. Meetings will be arranged with input from the committee members for convenience.
Membership:
• Membership will consist of 25-30 representative volunteers.
• Individuals will be selected based upon their representativeness through a random draw process
• Committee Chairpersons (2) will be elected by the committee
• Representative Areas:
§ Parents (8) – 1 from each building-2 parochial – 2 at large
§ Representatives from the Parochial Schools (3)
§ Support Staff- (2)- 1 paraprofessional-1 secretary
§ Bus Drivers- (4) 1 union leaders and 3 drivers
§ Students- (4)-2 from the OQ and 2 from RV & CE
§ Teacher- (5)- 1 from each building and 1 representing the union
§ Others as appointed by the superintendent or BOE
