April's Safe to Learn
School Safety Drill Act
by Cathy Slee
The School Safety Drill Act establishes minimum requirements and standards for schools to follow when conducting safety drills and reviewing school emergency and crisis response plans. The Act also encourages schools and first responders to work together for the safety of children. District 113A’s safety and emergency plans have been developed in collaboration with local fire and law enforcement officials, and all plans and procedures are reviewed and modified (as needed) on an annual basis. While we continue to practice safe procedures for fire evacuation and severe weather in our schools, we also explain and practice ways for students and staff to keep themselves safe during a violent situation through drills and discussions with our police liaison officer. When safety experts, families and educators work together, we can better ensure that our students remain safe to learn in our schools. Thank you for your partnership and support.
