March's Safe to Learn: Tornado Safety
by Cathy Slee
During the month of March, Illinois schools focus on bad weather safety in preparation for the Midwest's Tornado season. In every area of our schools, maps outlining safe "take cover" locations are posted. Each year, staff members lead the students through practice activities in which safe locations and body positions are identified. If you are in a school building when the tornado alarm sounds, safe procedures include: 1)exit large spaces like the gym; 2) take cover low to the ground in an area that is away from glass windows and doors; 3) protect head and neck with clasped hands. Interior walls and hallways are the safest choices when there is time to move to cover. On the first Tuesday in March, District 113A schools participate in the annual statewide tornado drill. Throughout the school year, school staff members implement safety procedures when the tornado alarm sounds in the community. Regular school activities resume only when school administrators receive an official "all clear" communication from the local police or fire agency. Parents can support our school safety efforts by encouraging their children to listen carefully and follow the directions of school staff during a bad weather situation. As always, we count on your partnership in keeping our students "safe to learn".
